Corinna....

I do agree with what you said. I find a lot of 'that' horrid. thus-- no TV for close to ten years. Don't miss it either.

Keep rockin' it!

Bravo! I think it is so easy to get lulled into the sense that anything on television is "entertainment" and get numbed out by some of the horrible things that are on there, even if they are blatantly hateful. They can't be that bad if they're on tv, right? They are so many shows I have stopped watching once I started seeing them with more consciousness of what they were promoting or degrading.

Ivan,

Congratulations. Today you have taken your first step toward saving kittens.

You are not a bad person at all. I think you are wonderful.

And it is wonderful that you have stopped taping because I am guessing that cable companies have statistics on what shows are being taped. You have just decreased the official on-the-record viewership by 1 person. Yippee!

Conan's jokes can sometimes be mean but I don't think they come close to the outright mysogyny on TMZ. If you are looking for funny may I recommend Craig Ferguson?

Yay Ivan! Thank you.

Corrina, Thanks for taking the time to clearly explain your thinking behind TMZ I have to agree that a lot of what they do is mean spirited. Sadly, in our culture, folks want this kind of stuff for exactly a lot of the reasons you detailed. I like Conan Obrien, Often many of his punchlines get laughs at the expense of fatties like me. I am disapointed that he is part of the fat hating in our country when he does a fat joke on notional television. I am also a fan. I like his style of humor and enjoy watching him. I do not stop watching him because he tells fat jokes.

When you described the scene of a drunk girl being dragged and casual jokes about abduction and rape, I have to concede that they are awful people doing awful things to make money and increase ratings.

and even though i do not want to make a declaration that watching it is wrong and I am never going to do it... I do see that watching it does in some way indicate my approval of the kind of hatred that they preach on TMZ.

So I do get it. I get that TMZ is a drain on the humanity of our country's soul.

So the auto record feature on my tivo has been cancelled and I will no longer be recording the show. I may still watch if I happen to be channel surfing at the time TMZ is on. I do not consider myself a bad person for watching the show. I am just not as into watching it anymore after considering the points you make about it.

Kittens are too cute to kill.

Cheers,

Ivan

Thanks for posting about this. I appreciate your individual voice here on the sphere. I like speaking with you and chewing on ideas that we both think. This post has got me thinking a lot.
I like watching TMZ. The perverse perspective of some of the youth of our day shown via the "Jersey Shore" show was so bad it was good to me.

In relation to your post, it has me thinking about my involvement with Fat Acceptance. I agree that there is a lot of wrong and misinformation out there about fat. When Obama pointed out his wife and used the words like "childhood obesity epidemic" I was disheartened.

I don't want to give up my TMZ (a guilty pleasure) yet I agree that watching it may be part of the problem. Do I get blacklisted by certain elements of the FA movement because I like to hear what the young, sexy, and affluent holly-wooders are doing?

I totally see the honor and integrity in your post about this.

I certainly do not want kittens to die, and I do not support the institutional shaming and denigrating of women... (I think)

I wonder if my lack of understanding, or education about feminism, makes me culpable.

Can I watch TMZ and Chelsea Lately, and The Soup, and still honestly and accurately maintain my self concept of a man who respects women?

Thanks for a thought provoking post

@R - thank you for entering me in a contest. What fun. And yeah, using a program to scrape content from other sites is exactly what they did. And she is totally lying about her site being about weight loss - the only sites they were stealing from were sites like this one and I never talk about weight loss.

Great post about Kiyonna. More people need to know about them.

Their only location in GA is 4 hours away from me, so Lane Bryant is my best option for shopping in person.

This is me in the 3/4 Sleeved Scalloped Boudoir Lace Dress in 2007:

I donated the dress to Enchanted Closet, a non-profit that supports teen girls from low income families. They give away prom dresses each year.
